Graphite Collage, Wire Collage.
My work is about using the essence or basic forms of structure as a metaphor for a universal truth and spirituality. My interest is to distill the shapes that I see in nature and architecture to their most basic forms: the cube, sphere, column, or line. This distillation process and seeking out the foundation, the keystone, "that which is most important," is what propels me forward and leads me to discover time and again that beauty begins in the simplest of forms.
I began my professional career as an oceanographer, and it was during the study of the architecture of microscopic ocean plants that I recognized the importance of structure/sub-structure, both spiritually and philosophically. My process of creating each work reinforces the recognition that seemingly disparate forms can share similar sub-structures; and similarly, that the truths which govern all human experience are composed, at some crucial level, of the same substance. The quiet forms and colors of my work encourage contemplation of these common threads that run through the physical and spiritual world on the micro and macroscopic levels.
Spirituality (truth) and physicality (structure) may manifest in radically different ways, and the challenge to find the essential piece – the common ground – that is the same in all remains the challenge of my work, and my challenge to the viewer.
