The Norwich Arts Center presents The Spirit of the Wolf, an exhibit of encaustic paintings by artist Lindsay Aromin at the NAC Gallery from Wednesday, October 5, 2011 to Saturday, October 29, 2011. An Opening Reception for the exhibit will be held Friday, October 7, 2011 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. An artist who works to portray the beauty and importance of animals threatened by extinction, Aromin’s latest focuses on the American gray wolf, exploring both the mysterious mythology and the global realities surrounding these fascinating creatures.
The protection of endangered species is important to artist Lindsay Aromin, and the imminent reality of this global concern is reflected in her work, a record of the world as it is and while raising awareness to affect change. The life-like portraits of her subjects are carefully captured by Aromin in encaustic, a very meticulous process using several layers of paint and wax on wood. The result is a textural and life-like image.
Aromin decided to focus her latest work on the American gray wolf after a sanctuary outside of St Louis, MO where they care for these wolves and release them into the wild when they are healed. For centuries, the wolf has captured the imagination of different cultures, and Aromin’s in-depth study continues this tradition.
“I suppose these beautiful animals have captured my spirit,” Aromin says of her work, “and so I attempted to portray the wonder and complexities of the wolf society and inspire a deep respect for the animal. I hope the viewers will be made more aware of the world around you.”
