Artist Statement

My intention whether I am portraying someplace or someone is to try and capture the essence of either the person or the place. I am most comfortable with places and people I am familiar with. This in part explains the preponderance of family faces and local places in my work. I can more easily express an understanding and a relationship with people and places I know more intimately. To say something more about them than simply describe their physical characteristics requires more than a passing acquaintance.

To capture the essence of a place, to express the truth about it involves having a history with it, experiencing it with some depth. That does not necessarily require a long period of time but something profound about the encounter. Similarly, with people, knowing them on some level beyond casual acquaintance is an important aspect of being able to portray them with something more than dispassionate observance. Capturing some spark of their identity, some hint of their personality makes the work more than just documentation.

For everyone there are people and places that have great meaning, great importance. In my attempt to capture those people and places significant to me I hope to tap into that universal recognition of place and personality. In the expressions and the atmospheres in my work there is hopefully something familiar, something collective that can be shared.
