In 1987, the Norwich Arts Council (NAC) identified the need to create a gallery space for showcasing regional artists. Wanting to create a local arts space and simultaneously to invest in the potential of downtown Norwich, NAC leased and renovated the ground floor at 60 Broadway. This historic building (60-64 Broadway), formerly St. Mary’s Abstinence and Benevolence Building, was constructed in 1892 and was purchased by NAC in 1995.
The NAC Gallery is now the longest on-going cooperative gallery in southeastern Connecticut. We offer both solo and group shows, including the work of both present and past NAC Cooperative members. Exhibitions rotate every month. Annual shows include the juried community Photo Show, the Connecticut Women Artists show, the juried Artistic Wanderings exhibit, and the very popular 6x6: A Sale of Small Holiday Treasures show. The Norwich Cultural Arts & History Project usually arranges an annual exhibit as well—in the past two years, they have sponsored exhibits titled A Life in Stone: The Cape Verdean Stone Masonry Tradition in Norwich and Distances Traveled: The Immigrant Experience in Collage.
Admission to the NAC Galleries is free and open to the public on Wednesday through Saturday from 12-4 PM. Opening Receptions are held on the First Friday of every month from 7 – 9 PM and are also free, with refreshments, meet the artists and sometimes even some live music.
