ARTIST STATEMENT
In Plain Sight
Art. In plain sight everywhere I look. I can spend hours in one spot, finding little works of art hidden in the pattern of a storm grate. Or an air vent in the sidewalk, the cracked veins in a stone slab, rusty bolts and hinges on a door frame. The swirls of color as paint peels from stucco, revealing earlier versions of itself. A brick weeping pigments of minerals, salts, lichen. A board weathered by salt air, water, rusted nails.
And ordinary things, oh I find them so far from ordinary. An old medicine bottle, label faded and yellowed. Scraps of paper, handwritten love notes, or maybe just a grocery list, a ledger, things to do. An assemblage of oil cans, begging to be thunked. A carpenter’s ruler, numbers worn, hinges reluctant to open. Fishing lures. Broken floor tiles. Dilapidated barns ready to tumble. A piano left outside in the elements, wires and hammers silenced.
They all find their way into my artwork. I have saved them from oblivion. Passing moments preserved.
An artist friend once told me that I was embracing the Japanese concept of “wabi-sabi.” I had to look it up. ‘Wabi’ expresses simplicity, impermanence, flaws, and imperfection. ‘Sabi’ displays
and expresses the effect that time has on a substance or any object. Together ‘wabi-sabi’ embraces the idea of aesthetic appreciation of aging, flaws, and the beauty of the effects of time and imperfections.* Yep, that’s me.
I hope you can find the beauty in these images that I found. And just maybe the next time you look around, you too will find art in plain sight.
